Zach Sheets enjoys a multifaceted life as a composer, orchestral flutist, and chamber musician. Zach serves as flutist for the [Switch~ Ensemble] and Duo Axis, and is Principal Flute, Lorusso Chair, of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra. Zach was the 1st prize winner of the 2017 Byron Hester Competition, 1st prize in the 2015 Tallon Perkes Competition, and 3rd prize in the 2019 San Diego Flute Guild Young Artist Competition. An active freelancer, he has performed with the Boston Ballet, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Talea Ensemble, Slee Sinfonietta, Ensemble Signal, Albany Symphony, Portland Symphony, the New World Symphony, Chorus Pro Musica, and more.
During the summer, he has performed as part of the Spoleto Festival USA, the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, and the Royaumont, June in Buffalo, ManiFeste, Klangspuren, and Aldeburgh Festivals. With [Switch~] and Duo Axis, ensemble-in-residence engagements include Bard College, University of Chicago, Cornell, Eastman School of Music, Harvard University, Ithaca College, and UC Berkeley. Zach formerly served as Managing Director of Talea Ensemble and Executive Director of [Switch~ Ensemble].
As a composer, his works have been performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Ensemble InterContemporain, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Ogni Suono, Wolftone, and more. Recent honors include the 1° Prix du Jury and the Lorraine Vaillancourt Prize at the FORUM Internationale des Jeunes Compositeurs in Montreal, Canada. Zach works as a freelance composer & performer in Boston and New York, and frequently travels to major festivals, including the Spoleto Festival USA, Royaumont Voix Nouvelles, Aldeburgh Festival, Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, or Klangspuren Ensemble Modern Academy.
